DRAGON KENPO KARATE
Dragon Kenpo Karate is a streamlined and easy-to-learn martial arts system with roots in American Kenpo Karate and boxing. The system focuses on simple, natural movements and a fluid combination of strikes, locks, throws, and weapon defenses. Rather than relying on complex techniques or traditional forms, Dragon Kenpo is designed to be intuitive, quick to learn, and easy to apply in motion.

Dragon Kenpo was developed by Ed Hutchinson in 1992, based on American Kenpo Karate, a style founded by Ed Parker and further refined by Al Tracy. Hutchinson, who trained under Jay T. Will (a student of both Parker and Tracy), integrated boxing's explosiveness, footwork, and distance control to create a more dynamic and adaptable system. His student, military professional Shawn Armstrong, further developed and modernized the system, which is now taught within Sanchin Budokai under the leadership of Armstrong's student, Tommie Petersson.
Within Sanchin Budokai, Dragon Kenpo serves as a complement to regular American Kenpo Karate training. The system is offered through workshops, online lessons, and specialized courses, allowing practitioners to deepen their understanding of simple and direct self-defense techniques. For those without access to a Kenpo school, distance-based training programs are also being developed, making it possible to learn and progress regardless of location.
Dragon Kenpo is designed for rapid learning and smooth application. Instead of memorizing long movement patterns, practitioners focus on coordination, balance, and adaptability. The techniques are based on natural movements and an understanding of timing and distance, making the system accessible to everyone, regardless of prior experience.
